BATCHELOR MILITARY RECORDS

Leverett Batchelor b. Putnam Co, GA, 7/30/1830 d. Morgan Co, GA, 7/19/1911. On 10/10/1861, he enlisted in Putnam Light Infantry, Co G, 12th GA Rgmt, R T Davis, Capt. His service was in the Army of Northern VA, under Lee and Jackson, throughout the war. In the battle of McDowell, VA, 5/8/1862, he was severely wounded, but after several months concalescence served through to the end, being one of the few present at the surrender 4/9/1865. The subject of this memoir was the last one of a family remarkable for service as Confederate soldiers. He was one of 6 brothers who served in the same company with the writer, Leverett, David, Early, Solomon, Richard, and Cordy. They had one sister. Thus did the aged father give up all his boys to the Southern cause. David was killed at Spottsylvania 5/10/1864. Solomon, Cordy, Richard, and Early suffered for months in northern prisons. At the close, Leverett and his 4 brothers returned home, and as good citizens, entered heartily into the work of restoring the Southland. In this, Leverett was engaged almost to the end of his life, having worked more than 40 yrs after surrender. I am all the more pleased to write this memoir because my comrade was so quiet and unassuming in life. May he rest in peace". "ROBERT YOUNG"
DEATH: NOTE: Capt Robert Young was Commander of Putnam Co GA Volunteers during the Civil War. In another clipping, almost exactly the same story is told. This second clipping tells that Leverett's brother David was mortally wounded and Leverett stayed with him on the battlefield until he died. Leverett then buried him in a shallow grave dug with his "bayonette".
