. . . celebrate and solemnize the Rites of Matrimoney between Luther Kennedy and Clarissa Hardison, and join them together as man and wife.
Witness, Benj. Aycock, Clerk of the County Court for said County, this 23 day of March, A.D. 1856.

To any ordained minister of any religious denomination or any justice of the peace of said county:
H W Rouse having applied to me for a License for the marriage of Robert Hardison of Lenoir Co aged 23 yrs, color white the son of _____ and _____, the father now dead, the mother living, resident of Lenoir Co and Amy Howard of Lenoir Co age 18 yrs, color white d/o Phillip Howard & _____ the father living, the mother living, resident of Lenoir Co. And the written consent of _____ said _____ to the proposed marriage having been filed with me.
And there being no legal impediment to such marriage known to me, You are hereby authorized, at any time within 1 yr from the date hereof, to celebrate the proposed marriage, at any place within the said county.
You are required, within 2 mos after you shall have celebrated such marriage, to return this license to me, at my office, with your signature subscribed to the certificate under this license, and with the blanks, therein filled according to the facts, under penalty of forfeiting $200 to the use of any person who shall sue for same.
